A farm breeding project flint corn population. The long term goal for this corn is to create a short season, cold tolerant, high carotene flint corn with high levels of resistance to foliar leaf disease, especially Northern Leaf Blight, Grey Leaf Spot, and Common Rust.
Varieties included in the original population include, Cascade Series Flints(Ruby Gold, Maple Gold, and Creamcap), Abenaki Flint, Byron Flint, Bronze Beauty Flint, Cuarentan Cateto, Cargill North Temperate Zone Cateto Composite, Mexident, Cargill North Temperate Zone Cuzco Composite, and Cargill North Temperate Zone Caribbean Composite.
Our breeding goals for this corn is to increase cold tolerance by the inclusion of Highland Mexican and Andean flint corn genetics, increase foliar disease resistance genetics by the inclusion of Caribbean corn genetics, and select for high carotene endosperm genetics primarily coming from South American Cateto Sulino genetics.
This corn is highly variable and unstable at this time as I am in the early stages of selecting for the traits I am looking for with the founder corns having been mass crossed for three generations.
