Miner's Lettuce, Claytonia

Very juicy, mild greens that grow through cold weather. Native to California, where it sprouts with the fall rains and fades with warm weather. Likes a moist rich soil in a semi-shaded location, but tolerates full sun in cold weather. Used as a winter crop in cold frames and hoophouses as far north as Maine, and outdoors in zones 7-9. Fine as a first spring salad. Given water, can be succession-sown until weather gets really hot. Best before flowering, though flowers and entire plant are edible.
