A vibrant and colorful Asian green created by Frank Morton of Wild Garden Seed. The original mix included various leafy Asian greens in the Brassica rapa species, including Chinese Cabbage and Pac Choi. He also crossed in Scarlet Ohno turnip which provided much of the purple color present in the mix as well as giving them a strong tendency towards producing a red/purple fleshed turniplike taproot. I typically transplant this into the field so my roots are very gnarled, but a direct seeding would likely provide very shapely turnips as well as greens. I have been selecting my own strain since I received seed from Holly Dumont in 2012. I have been selecting for more consistent purple/red leaf and petiole color and a more lobed leaf shape. This is still a highly variable breeding population vs a stablized variety. They also have a tendency to become enormous if allowed to grow for a long period in fertile soil. Very fast growing, delicious. Somewhat difficult to market as it doesn't fall into any clear Asian green "market class", but the red specimens tend to sell much better for me, so I'm selecting for more color.
