NEWLY AVAILABLE: A prolific 60-day sweet pepper that sets uniform, thick-fleshed, flavorful fruit in cool weather, the Merrimack Wonder Pepper was a favorite among commercial and home growers in the Granite State from the late 1930s, when it was first developed at UNH, until the early 80s, when the company selling its seeds went out of business suddenly. After years of looking, a group of farm and garden enthusiasts from central NH finally uncovered a seed source and has spent the last three years growing the plant and saving seeds. The goal: to reintroduce this valuable heirloom in northern New England. In addition to all of its other great qualities, the Merrimack Wonder freezes beautifully, and frozen pepper slices fried up on a cold winter's night are as tasty and crisp as when they went into the freezer in late summer.
